Adult Children of Alcoholics Organization

Adult Children of Alcoholics World Service Organization is a wonderful non-profit organization dedicated to helping children of Alcoholics break the cycle of alcoholism.   ACA WSO provides support group meetings, online alcoholism support forums, newsletters, online alcoholism educational articles and is a worldwide organization.

ACA WSO mission statement: “This corporation is a nonprofit public benefit corporation and is not organized for the private gain of any person. It is organized under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for Charitable purposes. The specific purpose for which this corporation is organized is to serve the Fellowship of Adult Children of Alcoholics. It is in effect an agency created and now designated by that Fellowship to maintain services for those seeking, through Adult Children of Alcoholics, the means for arresting the emotional disease of family alcoholism. This is done by sharing information and experiences with one another and by applying to their own lives, in whole or in part, the Twelve Steps which constitute the recovery program upon which Alcoholics Anonymous is founded.”

ACA WSO has adapted the traditional alcoholics anonymous 12 step program to fit the needs of children of alcoholics.  Children of Alcoholics are often predisposed genetically, socially or emotionally to have alcohol or other substance abuse problems.  They have witnessed and lived through situations that only they and their peers can understand.  This 12 step program and anonymous support group helps them break the cycle of alcoholism and cope with life as the child of an alcoholic.

Adult Children of Alcoholics is a non-profit organization which holds support meetings around the world for children of alcoholics and other dysfunctional families.  Although the ACA is free to its members they do need funds to operate.  They accept donations and can use your help.

Alcohol Treatment: St Mary’s in England offers Substance Abuse Treatment

St Mary’s Amina Center in England is now adding substance abuse and addiction treatment to their services.  They will be exclusively treating health care professionals who have alcohol and drug addiction problems.

England is already suffering from a shortage of Health Care professionals and cannot afford to lose 10% of its workforce.  There is a general attitude of shame to have a substance addiction within the health care community which tends to make it harder to treat.  However, based on studies health care professionals seem to respond more positively when provided treatment by fellow professionals.

“The program is an out-patient, week-day program, based upon individual need. A patient could be enrolled in the program for as little as two weeks and as long as eight weeks, with an average stay of four to six weeks. The center can treat four to 10 patients at a time. Confidentiality is protected and the center has a separate access from the main hospital.”

This will be a great program to help health care professionals with addiction problems in England.

Isopropal Alcohol Ingestion

The three most common forms of alcohol poisoning are ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol (isopropal alcohol). Ingesting these types of alcohol can have horrible and life threatening consequences.

It is important to be able to recognize these forms of alcohol poisoning and their symptoms because prompt treatment is essential to survival. The internal organs are most severely effected depending on how much and which type of alcohol is consumed. Isopropal Alcohol Ingestion is specifically dangerous due to it’s high potency.

“Isopropanol

Isopropanol is found in OTC rubbing alcohol (70% isopropanol), antifreeze, skin lotions, and some home cleaning products.

Death from ingestion of isopropanol is uncommon. Isopropanol has 2-3 times the potency of ethanol and causes hypotension and CNS and respiratory depression more readily than ethanol. Peak levels occur approximately 30 minutes after ingestion because of rapid GI absorption, which is delayed in the presence of food. Isopropanol is a CNS and cardiac depressant with about twice the potency of ethanol. Serum levels more than 400 mg/dL are potentially fatal.

Approximately 20-50% of isopropanol is excreted unchanged by the kidney, while 50-80% is converted in the liver to acetone, which is a CNS depressant in its own right. Acetone is excreted primarily by the kidneys, with some excretion through the lungs. The elimination half-life of isopropanol is 4-6 hours; that of acetone is 16-20 hours. The prolonged CNS depression seen with isopropanol ingestion is partially related to acetone’s CNS depressant effects.”

Source: www.emedicine.com

Isopropanol Alcohol Ingestion can cause severe GI hemorrhage, refractory hypotension, and hemolytic anemia.

Although most cases of Isopropal Alcohol ingestion are accidental and by younger children there are cases of adults ingesting isopropal alcohol in suicide attempts, for recreation and misuse by alcoholics desperate for alcohol. If you suspect someone abusing isopropyl alcohol contact 911. For alcoholics please have an intervention and suggest they seek alcohol abuse treatment.
